Learned a knife trick from a line cook at a diner in Akron

I was grabbing breakfast at this rundown diner in Akron last month and watched the cook quickly sharpen his chef knife on a ceramic mug bottom. Tried it myself at home that night and it actually brought a dull edge back for a few quick cuts. Anybody else got weird hacks they picked up from watching other cooks?

Not gonna lie, that ceramic mug trick barely does anything for me. You sure it wasn't just in your head?

Oh man, I was totally with you on this one for years. I thought people were just hyping up some random kitchen hack. But I tried it last week with a cheap gas station coffee and it actually made it so much smoother I couldnt believe it. Seriously, the bitterness almost disappeared and I could actually taste the roasty notes instead of just "hot brown liquid." I still think it depends on the mug though, my thin diner cup did nothing but my thick stoneware one totally changed the game.
