The old guy at the supply house in Toledo told me to stop kicking my seams, and he was right
I was picking up a roll of tack strip and some seam tape at a supply house in Toledo about 4 months ago, and this older installer I see there sometimes watched me load up and said 'you still kicking your seams flat, huh?' I said yeah, doesn't everybody. He just shook his head and told me to try a seam roller on my next stretch job instead, said kicking stretches the backing and shows up as a ridge after a few seasons. I figured he was just being an old guy, but the very next job was a 40 yard living room in a rental with cheap berber, and I tried the roller. Night and day. The seam laid down flat with almost no tape showing, and the edges stayed tight when I came back to trim. I've done it that way on every job since, and I just got a callback from a landlord who said it was the cleanest seam he's seen in 10 places he's had done. Anybody else out there rolling their seams instead of kicking, or am I late to something everybody already knew?
