The day I installed carpet in a 300 year old barn in Vermont

I was knee deep in this historic barn floor and the owners kept saying "just make it look rustic" so I nailed down some loops by hand. Has anyone else dealt with customers who want carpet in a place that's basically still dirt?

Barn floors are alive, they breathe and shift with the seasons. Nailing carpet loops down is just asking for a trip hazard when that subfloor moves an inch in the spring thaw. The moisture alone will rot the jute backing in about two years flat. Should have told them to go with a thick wool flokati rug they can just roll up and beat clean.

Hate to see good money go into something that's gonna buckle in six months.
