That 5 year old carpet I pulled up yesterday was a real wake up call

I went to do a tear-out in a house built in 2019 and the padding underneath was basically dust. The homeowner said they never had any spills or pets, just normal foot traffic from two people. The carpet looked fine on top but the foam backing had completely disintegrated in three spots near the hallway. I think the cheap rebond pad they used just couldn't handle the humidity from the crawlspace. Has anyone else seen modern carpet fail that fast?

Hold on, a five year old carpet turning to dust sounds like an extreme case, not the new normal most people see. I'd guess that crawlspace humidity combined with a bottom-of-the-barrel pad is the real issue here, not modern carpet quality in general. My experience is that a good pad and proper environment make a huge difference, so I wouldn't panic about all new carpet just yet.
