Rant: Customer told me my seams were too tight and I got defensive at first

This guy named Jerry from a job in Oak Park last month straight up told me my seams were pulling apart because I was stretching the carpet too tight. I been doing this 12 years and thought I knew better. But I went back and looked at three of my jobs from that week and sure enough, two had slight gaps starting. I loosened up my power stretcher tension by about 20 percent and now the seams lay flat with no visible line. Sometimes you gotta listen to the customer even when they ain't a pro. Anyone else had to eat crow on something you thought was your strength?

Twelve years in and this is exactly the kind of thing that humbles you quick. I've been running my own van for eight years and I still catch myself getting defensive when a customer points something out. But you're right, sometimes the customer sees it from a different angle and they're not wrong. The real pros are the ones who can step back and check their own work instead of doubling down on pride. Ego kills quality faster than any bad tool ever could.

How long'd it take you to actually check your own work after he said it?
