PSA: A piece of scrap vinyl flooring saved a tricky threshold job

Had a weird 3/8 inch gap under a door in a 1950s house where the subfloor was just uneven enough to cause a trip hazard. Instead of trying to build up with adhesive, I cut a strip from some leftover vinyl plank, glued it down as a shim, and then stretched the carpet over it perfectly. What's your go-to trick for fixing a small, annoying floor dip before laying carpet?

@emmar75 yeah, life loves throwing those little curveballs at you! For dips like that, I've found a quick trick: I cut a few layers of heavy roofing felt to fit the low spot, then overlap them like a shingle until the dip is level. Takes about 10 minutes, no glue mess, and the carpet lays flat over it no problem. That vinyl plank idea is smart too, especially if you have scraps laying around.

Ever try to fix a squeaky floorboard only to make it ten times worse? I had a spot in my old kitchen that groaned like it was haunted. I figured a few nails would shut it up. Wrong. I must have hit a pipe or something because the next thing I know, I'm calling a plumber for a tiny, expensive leak. Sometimes the simple fix just finds a whole new problem.
