Old timer in Wichita showed me a trick for stretching seams

Met a retired installer at a supply shop in Wichita last Tuesday. He watched me fight with a seam for 10 min and said "you're pulling against the grain, kid." He showed me how to angle the knee kicker at 45 degrees and tap the seam with a rubber mallet. Saved me an hour on that bedroom job. Anybody else got a trick from a veteran that totally changed their install game?
