My wife's uncle, a retired installer, said he never used a power stretcher on stairs, always just a knee kicker.

He argued it gives more control on the turns, but I've always been taught the power tool is non-negotiable. Has anyone else switched methods after a long time?

Honestly, "never used a power stretcher on stairs" is wild to me. That's how you get wrinkles and a bad install over time. I wouldn't trust a job done that way.

My last installer skipped the power stretcher on the landing. I mean, you could see the ripple after a month. It just doesn't hold up right.

My first boss in Atlanta swore by the knee kicker method on stairs. I did it his way for three years. Then I saw a stair job I did start to bubble at the seams after one hot summer. Watching that happen changed my whole view. Now I won't touch a stair without the power stretcher to lock it down tight.
