I finally botched a pattern match on a commercial job in Denver

I was laying a 12x12 grid pattern in a hotel lobby last Tuesday and didn't realize the carpet roll had shifted on the truck until I was three rows deep. The patterns were off by a full inch and I had to rip out 40 feet of material before the glue tacked up. Has anyone else dealt with a misaligned roll mid-install and found a way to salvage it without starting over?

The carpet roll shifting during transit is actually more common than most people realize, especially with larger commercial rolls that aren't properly blocked. I had a similar situation happen with a 15x15 grid in a casino hallway back in 2019 where the pattern was off by about half an inch by the time I got to the fourth row. You might not have needed to rip all 40 feet out if you had caught it early enough and used a carpet stretcher to gently ease the material back into alignment from the center seam out. Did you check if the roll had any twist in it before you started, or did the shift happen only from the truck ride?

Terry, I gotta push back a little on the carpet stretcher idea for a full inch off. A stretcher can fudge maybe a quarter inch if you're lucky, but an inch is way too much. You'll end up with ripples or the pattern looking stretched and weird. Once the glue is that far off, you're honestly better off ripping it out like Luna did. I've tried to fudge it before on a smaller job and it looked terrible, had to pull it anyway.
