Had a stair job go sideways last Tuesday because I trusted the measurements

I was installing carpet on a split-level staircase in a house over in Oak Park, and the homeowner had already ripped out the old stuff before I got there. Turns out the top tread was a full half inch wider than the rest and I didn't catch it until my first piece was cut too short. Anyone else run into weird stair measurements that throw off your whole layout?

Oh man, did you check the riser heights too? I had a similar thing happen on a set of stairs in a 1920s house where every single tread was a different size.

Bet those risers were originally hand-cut on site.
