A flooring company critic changed my knife technique
A 20-year installer in Dallas told me my utility knife angle was creating frayed edges and after watching him score and snap a carpet seam clean in one pass, I switched to a 30-degree hook blade and now my joins lay flat every time, anyone else had to relearn the basics after years in the game?

The 30 degree hook blade thing is a total game changer once you commit to it. I fought it for like two years because my old boss swore by the straight blade and I thought the hook was just for rookies. But after I watched a commercial guy zip through a 12 foot seam without even breathing heavy, I gave it a real shot and never looked back. The key is you gotta let the hook do the work, not press down hard like you're carving a turkey. Took me about a week to stop snapping blades every ten minutes too, since the hook edge lasts way longer when you're not dragging it sideways. Now I carry two knives on every job, one with the hook for seams and one straight for trimming, and my callback rate for frayed edges basically dropped to zero.
