The laser level I bought for $60 saved my stair stringer layout
I always did stringers with a framing square and tape, but 3 weeks ago I grabbed a cheap laser level on a whim. It showed my back stair landing was off by almost a half inch, which would have caused a wobbly tread, and now I will not cut stringers without checking the laser first. Anyone else trust the old math over tools and regret it?

Did you ever check the old layout against the laser after it already bit you? I was the same way, swore by the square and tape. Then I found out my garage slab was a quarter inch low in one corner, and my stringers were just following the bad floor. The laser showed it right away, and now I run it across any landing before I even mark wood. Still keep the square handy, but that little tool caught something my eyes just wouldn't have seen.
