That $40 chalk line reel paid for itself in one afternoon

I used to fight with those cheap chalk lines that tangle up and snap mid-snap, so I finally grabbed a decent one from the supply house for about 40 bucks. Marked out 12 full wall layouts for a kitchen remodel in Dallas and not one single tangle, even with the line wet. The gear inside the reel just feels smoother, and it actually rewinds without that annoying kink near the hook. Anyone else finally cave on a nicer chalk line after years of cheap ones, or is that just me?

My buddy Mark bought one of those cheap plastic ones from Home Depot last spring to lay out his patio. It snapped on the second pull and left a crooked line he had to redo three times. He got so pissed he threw it in the trash and ordered the good one online that night. Now he brags about it every time we do a project together, says it's the best 40 bucks he's spent on tools this year.

That bit about Mark snapping it on the second pull hits close to home. I remember reading somewhere that the cheap ones use a plastic pawl inside the reel that strips out if you pull too hard, and that's exactly what happened to my old one on a deck job. It left a line that was off by almost half an inch, and I had to redo the whole layout with a string and a level. The 40 dollar one I got later has a metal pawl and a sintered gear, that's the real difference. I didn't think the rewind speed would matter either, but it saves a ton of time when you're doing a bunch of marks in a row.
