Switched from nail gun to hammer for baseboards and it worked out better

I had a job last month in Portland where the existing trim was all over the place. I kept missing with my 18 gauge and splitting the old wood. After three bad shots I put the gun down and grabbed my Estwing. Finished the whole room in about the same time with zero splits. The hand nailing just gave me better control on that warped stuff. Anyone else find themselves going back to basics on certain jobs?

Three weeks ago I would have agreed with @theabennett, but that Portland job changed my mind. The 18 gauge was biting sideways on every other piece of that old fir, and the hammer gave me the feel to follow the existing nail holes. Sometimes the "technique problem" is the tool fighting the material, not the guy holding it.

Holding the gun right would have solved that. Sounds like a technique problem more than a tool problem.
