Stopped sanding end grain the hard way after 12 years

Used to buzz every board end with 80 grit until a customer ran their hand across a shelf I built and said 'this feels rough, are you done?'. Switched to a block plane and then 120 grit on end grain, zero tear out, and honestly it's faster than fighting the sander. Anyone else have a basic move that took them a decade to unlearn?
