Spent 9 hours on a 45 minute cabinet install last Saturday, and I keep going back and forth on whether it was my fault
Had a homeowner in Tacoma with a wall that was out of plumb by almost an inch over 6 feet, and I didn't catch it until the uppers were already on the cleats. Half of me says I should have checked that wall first thing, no excuses, that's on me for trusting the last guy's drywall work. The other half says nobody could have seen it coming because the old cabinets were shimmed so bad they hid the whole mess. I ended up pulling everything down, sistering a straightedge to the studs, and re-hanging the run twice. Total time was somewhere around 9 hours for what should have been a 45 minute job, and the homeowner was cool about it but I ate the extra day. The debate in my head is whether you always laser the wall before quoting, or whether you trust the room until it lies to you. Where do you all land on that, do you check every wall or only the ones that look suspect?
Man, been there and it stings. What worked for me was getting in the habit of checking with a 4 foot level before I even unload the truck, takes two minutes and saved my butt more than once. It feels like overkill on the easy ones, but the one time it pays off you forget all the times it didn't.
