Showerthought: I gave up on glue for crown molding after 12 years and I'm kicking myself
For over a decade I glued and pinned every inside corner on crown molding, no exceptions. I learned it from an old timer in Portland back in 2011 and figured it was just how you did it right. Then two months ago I watched a finish guy in Boise cope a 6 inch crown in about 90 seconds with a coping saw and a rattail file. I tried it on a small closet job and the fit was tighter than anything I ever got with glue alone. Turns out coped joints move with the wood and you don't get those little gaps opening up when the seasons change. Since then I've coped maybe 40 corners and only had to touch up 2. Not saying glue is wrong, plenty of guys swear by it and I respect that. Anyone here switch over later in the game, or do you still glue and pin and call it good?
