Saw a framer using a chalk line for EVERYTHING on a site in Columbus, got me thinking about old habits
I was doing a walkthrough on a 40-unit townhouse project in Columbus last Tuesday and this older framer, maybe 60, was laying out studs with a chalk line and a speed square instead of pulling out a laser. He snapped every single layout line, even on the floor where a laser would have been faster. I asked him about it during a break and he said lasers make him slow because he keeps second-guessing the setup. On the other hand, my crew runs laser levels on everything and we hit the wall layout in half the time, but I have seen guys fight a laser for 10 minutes when the batteries are low or the beam gets washed out by sunlight. So which is it, are chalk lines just stubborn tradition or do they force you to think through each mark instead of trusting a blinking dot? Has anyone else seen old school methods beat modern tools in a real production setting? I am genuinely split on this because that guy finished his floor layout before my guy had his laser set up and calibrated.
