Old timer told me to sand between coats of polyurethane. He was right.
I skipped it on a $2,000 built-in bookcase job last month and the finish looked like garbage. Now I spend an extra 15 minutes with 220 grit and it comes out glass smooth every time.

Oh man, I gotta say - 220 grit is definitely the way to go but maybe it's just me, I always go up to like 320 for the final sand before the last coat. Idk, 220 can leave some scratches you'll see later.

Have you ever tried wet sanding between coats? I do 220 with water, let it dry, then hit it with 400 before the last coat. @barbara429 is right about visible scratches but wet sanding cuts that down way better. Changes the whole game for smooth finish.
