My $80 laser level sat in the truck for 3 months, now I use it daily

Bought a laser level for a basement job in Des Moines last winter, figured it was just for layout lines. Used a string line and chalk on three closet builds before a buddy said I was wasting time fighting bowed studs. Tried it on the fourth closet and it shaved off maybe 40 minutes. Anyone else ignore a tool for months and then wonder how you worked without it?

Ditch the string line for good. Those chalk lines lie to you when the studs are even slightly off, and then you're trimming shims forever. What you're seeing is the difference between measuring twice to get a straight line and setting the laser once to get a true line. The string sags too if it's long, even a little bit, and that throws your layout off by a quarter inch fast. Lasers don't have that problem. Just make sure you're not using it for plumbing walls that are actually bowed, that's a different fix.
