Last Friday wrecked me, then made me change my framing routine
I've always cut top plates and bottom plates exactly the same, never gave it a second thought. But last week I was framing a small shed addition outside Boise and the top plate came up about a half inch short of the corner stud. Turns out the concrete slab had a dip I didn't account for, and my usual 'measure once, cut twice' habit bit me hard. A retired framer named Dale who was walking his dog stopped and pointed out that I should be scribing the top plate to the actual floor or just running it long and trimming after. I argued with him for a minute, then he offered to buy me a coffee if I tried his way on the next wall. I did, and it saved me maybe 20 minutes of fighting and shimming later. Now I'm wondering, how many of you cut top plates long when the floor isn't dead flat, or do you just trust your tape and adjust with shims afterward?
