Hot take: I clamped my glue-ups way too tight for 15 years
Last Tuesday I was gluing up a walnut table top in my garage in Boise and a guy from the local woodworkers club watched me crank down my pipe clamps with everything I had. He asked me to feel the squeeze-out and I barely got a drop, which tipped me off something was off. Turns out when you over tighten, you starve the joint and squeeze out almost all the glue, so the bond is weak. I backed off to just snug plus a quarter turn and got a nice even bead all along the seam. Anyone else learn this the hard way, or is there a trick to knowing how much is just right?
