Cedar fence gate sagging after 2 weeks, my hinge fix in Boise
Built a double gate for a customer out on Maple Street, 14 feet wide, and it drooped like crazy by day 12. Turned out my 3 inch hinges were way too small for that span. Swapped to a 5 inch heavy duty set with a diagonal cable tension kit, leveled it with a car jack, and it's dead straight now. Anyone else run into sag on wide gates and blame the wood before the hardware?

...my buddy Dan had the exact same thing happen on his place down in Nampa. He built a 12 foot gate out of cedar and it looked perfect for about a week, then started dragging so bad it tore up his gravel. He kept blaming the wood, saying it was green or whatever. Finally his neighbor who does welding came over and just looked at the hinges and laughed. Put bigger ones on with a turnbuckle kit and it fixed everything in an afternoon. He still talks about how dumb he felt, always check the hardware first.

Yeah I did the same thing with a fence post once, blamed the ground for months til I realized the bracket was undersized the whole time lol.
