Am I the only one who didn't know a standard 2x4 is actually 1.5 x 3.5 inches?
I was at a lumber yard in Denver two weeks ago picking up some studs for a small job and the guy behind the counter mentioned the actual size out of nowhere. I stood there doing math in my head for like a full minute because I have been framing for 9 years and just counted on the label being the size. Turns out a 2x4 starts at 2x4 when it is rough cut, then gets planed and dried down to 1.5 x 3.5, and this has been the standard since the 1960s. I felt like a total rookie but it also explains some gaps I have chased on remodel work in older homes. Does anyone here keep a cheat sheet of actual dimensions for common stock, and if so what sizes do you find yourself checking most?
