A trim carpenter in Raleigh told me to stop using my speed square for angle transfers

He watched me mark a stair stringer and said I was fighting the tool, not using it. Switched to a sliding bevel for copying existing angles and my second stringer fit on the first try, which never happened before. Anyone else made the jump from speed square to bevel for layout work?

Can't even copy a corner without droppin my pencil, so I'll take the help.

I've been using a speed square for 15 years and never had a stringer fail on me... maybe the guy just needed a sharper pencil or a better eye for the cut. Sliding bevels are great for copying weird corners, but for layout work they're just another thing to fiddle with. Sounds like you fixed one problem and created a new habit that might not matter much on the next job.
