Warning: I watched a coworker get promoted 3 times in 2 years while I stayed still. Here's the difference.
Same company, same department, similar starting point. She spent 30 minutes every week asking people what problems they were solving. I spent those 30 minutes perfecting my code. She got the raises because she knew what mattered to the boss. I found out when I asked for a promotion and they said, 'You do good work but you don't show initiative.' That hurt. Anyone else get passed over because you were heads down and not looking up?

Did you ever feel like you were debugging your own career path while she was out there networking her way to the top? I totally get it, I once spent six months perfecting a filing system at my office nobody even asked for (real winner move, I know). Meanwhile my coworker just smiled at the right people and got a corner office. Now I just wonder if I should've spent less time organizing and more time schmoozing, but honestly, my social battery runs out after two conversations.

Haven't you seen the quiet ones get the last laugh sometimes though?
