Vent: I spent 14 months writing cover letters like a robot before a recruiter laughed at me

So I was applying for jobs in Chicago last spring and I had this template I used for every single company. It was full of phrases like 'I am eager to leverage my synergistic skills' and 'my holistic approach to project management.' I thought that was how you sounded professional. Then a recruiter called me after an interview and straight up said, 'Your resume is great, but why did your cover letter sound like a LinkedIn influencer had a stroke?' I was stunned. I asked her what she meant and she said, 'We read those things in 30 seconds. We just want to know you read the job posting and actually care. You wrote the same generic garbage for all 47 places you applied.' That was the moment I realized I had been doing it all wrong. I rewrote my next cover letter like I was talking to a coworker at a coffee shop, mentioning one specific project from their website and why it clicked with me. I got an interview the next week.
