Took the safe job at a bank over a startup in Austin and I still think about it 6 years later
Back in 2018 I had two offers on the table at the same time. One was a teller gig at a bank in my hometown paying $31k with good benefits. The other was a marketing assistant role at a startup in Austin paying $38k but with no health insurance for the first 90 days. I picked the bank because my dad kept saying steady beats flashy and I was scared of moving to a new city with no safety net. The bank job was fine for about two years until they cut our branch hours and I got bumped to part time. Meanwhile the startup guy I turned down cashed out when they got bought in 2021 and he bought a house. I don't regret it exactly but I do wonder what I missed. Has anyone here taken the safer offer and later wished they had rolled the dice?
Wait, the bank bumped you from full time to part time? That part made my jaw drop. You did the "right" thing like your dad said and the place still cut you loose after two years. That is the part that gets me, because steady was not even steady. Your whole reason for picking that job fell apart anyway, so the fear cost you twice. Sure, the startup could have crashed too, but at least you would have known you tried. Anyway, feel free to take this with a grain of salt since I am just some guy on a forum.
