Took me 18 months to get a good mentor at my company

Everyone says to just find a mentor early on and it'll fix everything wrong with your career. But I asked five different senior devs at my office in Chicago and three said they were too busy, one said maybe but never followed up, and one gave bad advice. Finally got paired with someone who actually cares through a formal program they started last year. Did anyone else find that hunting for a good mentor took way longer than people let on?

Started going to this monthly meetup for junior devs that was honestly more of a support group than anything else. Met a QA manager who had been in the industry for like 20 years and she just started giving me little tips over coffee. Nothing formal, no official program, just a couple minutes here and there. Took about a year before I even realized she was my actual mentor. Funny how sometimes the best ones come from the weirdest places.

Took me even longer. Pure luck in my case.
