TIL the 15-minute phone screen told me more than 3 rounds of interviews

Back in March I flew out to Austin for a final round at a software firm. We did whiteboarding, culture fit, even a lunch with the team. Nothing felt off, but I got the rejection call the next week. Then a friend at another company set me up with a quick phone screen, just 15 minutes with the hiring manager. She asked one straight question about how I handle missed deadlines and my answer changed the whole conversation. I got the offer two days later. Has anyone else found that short informal chats beat the long formal process?

Read somewhere that interviewers often decide in the first few minutes anyway, so a long process just gives them more time to second-guess a good hire. The phone screen cuts through all that noise and gets to the real stuff, like how you actually work under pressure. Makes me wonder if companies just use those marathon interviews to make themselves feel thorough instead of actually learning anything useful.
