Stop padding your resume with skills you used once in 2019

I interviewed three candidates last week from Phoenix and every single one listed Python on their resume. When I asked them to explain a basic loop, two of them froze. Why do we keep doing this? A hiring manager will find out in 10 minutes, and then your whole interview is ruined. Wouldn't it be better to just say what you actually know and skip the embarrassment?

I read somewhere that recruiters spend about 7 seconds scanning a resume, so people just throw everything at the wall hoping something sticks. But your point about the 10 minute interview check is spot on. I had a coworker who put "SQL expert" on his resume after one basic query, then sat through a 45 minute technical panel trying to fake his way through joins. It was brutal to watch. The "skills used once in 2019" thing is real too, I feel like half the people applying for entry level jobs claim they know cloud computing because they touched an AWS console for a school project. Honestly, hiring managers want to see that you can learn fast, not that you memorized a list of buzzwords. Better to leave something off and look sharp than to list it and look like a liar.
