Spent 4 months trying to fix a spreadsheet error that was there from day one

I took over a client's bookkeeping last year and kept finding this weird discrepancy in their inventory numbers. Thought it was a formula issue, then a data entry problem, then maybe a system glitch. Tore my hair out for months. Finally traced it back to the very first entry I made when I started. One wrong cell reference. Four months. Has anyone else wasted that long on something that simple?

My neighbor spent 6 months building a deck and found out the whole thing was leaning because he used a level that was off by a hair from day one. It's funny how the brain works like that. We assume the problem has to be something complicated, so we dig into all these fancy theories instead of just checking the first brick we laid. It's like driving around for an hour looking for your keys when they were in your pocket the whole time. Maybe we just hate admitting the first step was wrong, so we make it ten times harder.

Heard a guy on a podcast say we basically have a reflex to assume the hard answer is the right one, even when the easy fix is staring at us. That deck story is almost painful because it's so relatable, we all do that at some point. It's like our brains just skip over the simple stuff because it feels too easy to be the real problem.
