Spent $1,200 on a resume writer in Chicago and I'm not sure it was worth it

I got laid off from my marketing job in March and panicked, so I hired a resume writing service based in Chicago for $1,200. The writer rewrote my whole resume and LinkedIn, and honestly the formatting looks great, but I've sent out 40 applications and only got 2 callbacks. My friend who just tweaked his own resume for free got 5 interviews last month, so now I'm wondering if I wasted the money. Has anyone else paid for a professional resume service and actually seen results from it?
