My old mentor in Chicago said to never ask for a raise until you've been somewhere 2 years.
After my third job in 5 years, I realized that's terrible advice and you should negotiate at every single offer. How do you guys handle salary talks now?

My uncle gave similar advice, and it really set me back early on.

But honestly, sometimes that kind of tough advice is what you need to hear. It might feel like it sets you back, but it can also push you to work harder and prove them wrong. Maybe your uncle saw a real problem and was trying to help in his own way, even if it came off harsh. I mean, easy praise feels good but it doesn't always prepare you for how hard things actually are. Getting that reality check early can force you to build real skills instead of just expecting things to work out.

Wait, your uncle told you the same thing? That's wild. @jesse_harris I get what you're saying about tough love sometimes being needed, but man, hearing that from a family member can sting so bad it just makes you give up. Like my cousin's dad told him he'd never be a good mechanic, and now he won't even change his own oil. That kind of advice can just crush you instead of building you up.
