Dropped $600 on a career coach, got told my resume was the problem
I paid $600 for six sessions with a coach in Chicago last spring, thinking I needed interview help. Turned out my resume read like a job description list, not a story, and rewriting it around actual numbers got me three callbacks within a month. Has anyone else shelled out for coaching and found the real issue was something way more basic?
My cousin did the same thing with a coach in Austin, paid around $500, and the guy spent two sessions fixing her LinkedIn headline before they even talked about interviews. So the format stuff really can be the whole ballgame, which is kind of annoying when you think about how much you paid for someone to point at a piece of paper. But here's the part that gets me: if three callbacks came from just adding numbers, how many other people are out there stuck in the same loop, blaming their talking skills when their resume never got them in the room to begin with? It makes you wonder if these coaches should just start every package by reading your resume first and telling you straight up that interviews are not your problem yet. Fixing the story and the numbers is free, so the real value is having someone force you to sit down and do it.
