Saw a carrier driver's checklist and it was pure gold

Last Friday I was waiting at a rest stop near Flagstaff and a car hauler pulled in to check his straps. I walked over and asked if he had tips for someone shipping a car cross country. He showed me his binder with a pre-load inspection list, stuff like checking tire pressure on the truck and marking every scratch on the car with chalk before it went on. He said the biggest mistake people make is trusting the quote without asking if the driver is insured for the cargo value. I never thought about asking for the driver's direct number before booking through a broker. Has anyone else gotten useful advice straight from a carrier on the road? I feel like that beat any online guide I've read.
