Rant: A guy at the auto parts store in Reno told me waxing hides scratches, and my hood proved him wrong
So I'm standing in line at the parts counter in Reno about 3 weeks ago and the guy behind me says wax is basically just makeup for your paint. I laughed it off, went home, and slapped a coat of wax on my black hood anyway because I had swirl marks and a nasty key scratch my neighbor's kid put in it. Two washes later the swirls were back and that scratch looked exactly the same, maybe worse because the wax made it shine. Wax does not fill anything, it just sits on top and washes off in like 4 or 5 washes, so all I did was waste 2 hours and 18 bucks on a tub of it. What actually helped was a cheap polish and a foam pad on my drill, took me 40 minutes and the swirls are gone for real. So what do you all use to get rid of fine scratches, because I'm done buying wax like it's a fix for anything?

That parts counter guy was just saying words to hear himself talk. Think about how often that happens though, somebody at a store or a bar speaks with total confidence and it turns out they have no clue. My uncle swore for years that seafoam in the gas tank fixes a rough idle, then his truck threw a code and it was a bad coil pack the whole time. We all just nod along because the guy sounds sure of himself. Wax on scratches is the same deal, it fools your eyes for one afternoon and washes off by the weekend. Paint has real layers to it and you have to cut into the top one to fix swirls, that is just how it works.
