I finally tried the 8pt grid trick in Figma after a coworker swore by it in Canva
My teammate Dana kept telling me to stop nudging frames by hand and just snap everything to an 8pt grid, so I tried it on a 12 screen mockup for our app redesign. Spacing got way more even and I cut my cleanup time from about 40 minutes down to 10. Has anyone else switched to a grid system in one tool but not the other, and did it stick?
Yeah the 8pt grid is a game changer once it clicks. I did the same thing in Figma but never bothered in Sketch and my files were a mess for months. Sticking with it in Figma but skipping it elsewhere is pretty normal, honestly.
Back in 2019 I spent a whole weekend rebuilding a client's dashboard in Webflow with a strict 8pt grid, felt like a genius, then opened their old WordPress site the next Monday and hand dragged every single block like nothing had changed. My brain just refused to carry the habit over. Same thing with my notebook at home, I use lined paper for work notes but grab whatever random scrap paper is on the counter for grocery lists. The grid only sticks when the tool kind of forces it on me, you know? Figma makes it so easy to set up that once it's on I stop fighting it. The second I'm in something that doesn't snap, all that discipline just evaporates. So yeah, totally normal that it only took hold in one place for you.
