Warning: I just saw three people at the state park set up their rain fly wrong in the same way.

They all had the fly touching the tent body, which defeats the whole point of having a double wall. I learned this the hard way last spring in the Smokies when my tent got soaked from condensation. What's the biggest tent setup mistake you see new campers make?

Yeah, seeing the fly touch the tent body is such a common one. I did that my first time out too and woke up with everything damp, not from rain but just from my own breath. It's a rough lesson to learn when you're already cold.

That condensation thing is the worst, especially when you're already freezing. Making sure the fly is pulled tight and not sagging onto the inner tent makes a huge difference. Even cracking a vent at the top, if your tent has one, lets a lot of that moist air out. A small camp towel is good to have just to wipe down the inside walls in the morning before you pack up. It's a simple fix but you really don't think about it until you've spent a damp night shivering.

Actually that dampness is condensation, not your breath. The fly touching the inner tent just makes it worse.
