That rain at Lost Lake changed how I pack for trips now

I was three miles into the Lost Lake trail when a sudden storm dumped on us for two hours straight, and my so-called waterproof bag left everything soaked including my sleeping bag. I spent that night shivering and realized I needed to test all my gear in actual rain before trusting it. How do you guys check if your stuff is really waterproof without getting stuck in a bad situation like that?

Wait, you put your phone in a dry bag and it still got fried? That's crazy to me. I would have assumed a dry bag was bulletproof honestly, never thought to test them like that. The bathtub trick sounds solid though, I'm definitely going to try that with my stuff this weekend. How long do you usually leave your dry bags submerged to feel confident they won't leak?

The garden hose trick changed everything for me honestly. I set up my tent in the backyard and sprayed it from every angle for like 15 minutes straight before a big trip. Found out my rainfly had a tiny rip near the seam that I would have missed otherwise. Also started tossing my dry bags in the bathtub with some weight inside to see if water sneaks in after a few hours. Learned that one the hard way when my phone got fried during a kayak trip. Sucks to find out in the field so better to soak stuff at home first.
