That guy at the trailhead was right about my tent stakes
Ran into an older fella at the Snowbird trailhead last month who watched me hammer in my cheap stakes with a rock. He said I'd be chasing them down by morning. I laughed it off, figured he was just being nosy. Wind kicked up at 2 AM, three stakes ripped clean out and my fly slapped me awake every few minutes. Ended up tying the corners to a log with my boot laces. I get it now, spend the $30 on decent ground screws. Anyone else learn this the hard way or do I just win the stubborn award?

Bought a set of those cheap aluminum ones years ago, same thing happened at a spot near the creek. Wake up at 3 AM, tent is doing the wave. Now I carry a few of the big plastic screw stakes, the orange ones. They twist in with a stick, no hammer needed. @rowan_anderson nailed it, that's exactly the merit badge I earned too. Worth every penny when the wind decides to test you.
