PSA: My 3-year-old tent from a big box store finally gave out in a downpour near Asheville.

I bought it for $80, thinking it was a decent deal for weekend trips. Last week, the rain fly seams leaked like a sieve and soaked everything inside. What's a solid, no-frills tent brand you'd actually trust in real rain?

Check out the REI Co-op brand, their basic tents are tough and won't break the bank.

My buddy's cheap tent did the same thing. He switched to a basic Eureka model and it's been solid for years.

Oh man, "leaked like a sieve" - that's exactly what happened to my old Coleman a couple years back. Totally brutal waking up in a puddle at 3am, everything damp and cold. I switched to an Alps Mountaineering Meramac and it's been through some real storms including a nasty one on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The seams are taped and the fly goes down low enough that water can't find its way in.
