My buddy in Colorado swears by a 20 degree bag for summer, but I think that's a huge mistake.

He uses it every July in the Rockies, saying it's versatile. But I've been cold in a 30 degree bag up there when the temp dropped to 40 at night. A bag rated for comfort at 20 degrees is overkill for most summer nights and just adds bulk. What's your go-to summer sleeping bag temp rating?

What elevation is your buddy camping at? A 20 degree bag makes sense above tree line where it can freeze any night, but it's way too warm for lower valleys.

Yeah, I froze my butt off with a 30 degree bag up there once.

Exactly! A 20 degree bag in July is asking to sweat all night long.
