Last weekend my tent got shredded by a storm at Big Sur and I had to sleep in my truck bed.
The wind ripped through our site around 3am and my Coleman 4-person just gave up on life - pole snapped in two places and the fly flew off into the dark somewhere - has anyone else had their gear just totally fail on a trip and what'd you do about it?

Jump right into the gear failure. That sucks but honestly a Coleman tent at Big Sur is asking for trouble. Those things are fine for calm backyard camping but a real storm will rip them apart. I've seen people lose cheap tents in way less wind than that.
You got lucky you had a truck bed to sleep in. A lot of people end up driving home or sleeping in a wet sleeping bag. You learned the hard way that gear matters for the spot.
For real though, Big Sur in winter is no joke. Next time bring something with aluminum poles and a full rain fly. Or just check the forecast better.

Yeah my buddy had a similar thing happen but with a different kind of tent up in the Sierra last spring. He bought one of those big cheap cabin tents and the wind just folded the poles like they were made of straw. We ended up tying a tarp between some trees and just sleeping under that for two nights. Honestly it was kind of cozy but also damp and miserable when the wind shifted. Its funny how you remember the trips where everything goes wrong way more than the smooth ones though.
