I finally tried that 'instant fire' gel everyone talks about for wet wood
Used it on some damp oak in the Smokies last fall, and it just smoked for ten minutes without a real flame. I learned a good ferro rod and some birch bark still beats a fancy bottle. Has anyone else had a product totally fail when you needed it most?

Sounds like that gel was more of a suggestion than a real fire.

My buddy Carl bought some of that fire gel last year for a camping trip. He tried to start a fire with it in his backyard fire pit on a damp evening. The stuff just sort of fizzed and made a weird blue smoke for about thirty seconds, then went out completely. He ended up using old newspaper and kindling like usual.

My cousin in Colorado swears by that gel for starting fires in the snow.
