I always thought the inflatable sleeping pads were the way to go... until my back gave out 4 hours into the first night

I saw some reviews saying foam pads are better for side sleepers. Maybe try a thicker inflatable?

You know, 4 inches is actually pretty standard for most inflatable pads, but the firmness level matters a ton for side sleepers. I tried a 3 inch foam pad once and it was way too thin, my hip hit the ground almost right away. The key is finding a pad that lets you sink in just enough without bottoming out. If your back gave out that fast, it might be the pad wasn't fully inflated or the R value wasn't right for the ground temperature. A lot of people don't realize that the cold ground can make your back muscles tense up even on a decent pad.
