Found out my sleeping bag was way warmer with a proper pad underneath

I always just threw my bag on the tent floor and froze until I borrowed a friend's insulated pad in Shenandoah last month. The R-value makes a huge difference, I went from shivering to actually comfortable. Anybody else skip this and regret it?

Jumped straight from a summer bag on bare ground to my first winter trip and learned this the hard way. Spent a night in the Adirondacks where every rock and root poked through and I was basically hugging the ground for warmth. An insulated pad with at least an R-value of 4 changed everything for me, but even a cheap foam pad under your air pad can help if you're on a budget.

Oh dude, EXACT same thing happened to me in Shenandoah too. I thought I was tough sleeping on just the tent floor and woke up shivering every single time. Getting a proper pad with some R-value underneath was like discovering a whole new world of camping comfort.
