Why do people torque lens mounts with a freaking impact driver

Pulled apart a Canon 70-200 yesterday and the mount screws were so mangled I had to drill two of them out, some owner clearly thought more ugga dugga equals better seal. Anyone else run into mounts that are completely stripped from over-torquing, and do you just replace the whole ring or try to helicoil it?

Helicoil worked fine on my 5D mount after I stripped one screw, never had an issue since.
