Vent: spent 6 hours on a Canon AE-1 shutter and it was still off at 1/1000
Last Thursday was supposed to be a quick CLA on a guy's AE-1 and it turned into a whole day. Got the top plate off fine, cleaned the magnet, and the slow speeds came back perfect, but 1/1000 was still running about a stop slow on my tester. Tried re-cleaning the curtain brake and re-tensioning the second curtain spring, nothing helped, and by hour 6 I was cross-eyed squinting at the curtain travel. Turned out the mirror box foam had gone sticky and was dragging on the curtain just enough to slow it at high speeds. I've done maybe 30 of these and never saw that one. What's your go-to trick for catching drag that only shows up at the fast speeds?
