Unpopular opinion: I thought the old guy's lighter fluid trick for stuck filter rings was nonsense, but it worked
Had a customer's 1970s lens come in last month with a filter ring fused on so tight I'd already started pricing a replacement barrel. The old guy who runs the counter at the shop down the street in Duluth said to put two drops of lighter fluid at the seam and wait 10 minutes. I rolled my eyes but tried it, and the ring spun off with barely any force. I still don't fully get why it works, something about the fluid creeping into the threads, but I've used it on three more since then. Anyone know if this is safe on coated glass or am I tempting fate here?
